Lissa has loved to draw for as long as she can remember. Largely self taught, she feels that art is in her blood, as both her grandfather and her father were “closet” artists who enjoyed drawing for their own pleasure. She has very fond memories of spending many a Saturday morning as a young child at the kitchen table with her Dad watching him draw horse after horse for her to trace. By the time she was 8 years old, she’d graduated from tracing to copying and by the age of 12 she was freehand drawing horses and other creatures that she’d conceived in her own imagination. As an older, dating teen and then as a young wife and busy mother of two, Lissa’s time was rarely her own and her art fell by the wayside. Finally in 2001, with children nearly grown and after a lifetime of little more than quick, simple sketches and doodles, she rediscovered the coloured pencils she’d abandoned as a child, found an intensity of pleasure in them that had previously escaped her and worked seriously with them until 2005, when a severe flare-up of Rheumatoid Arthritis in her hands forced her to take an unwelcome hiatus from drawing. Since 2010 Lissa’s health has significantly improved and she is back at her drawing table exploring her passion for pencils, this time with more of a focus on graphite.
