Back-roads

A drive in summer inspired this painting called "back-roads." As I began to paint it I was reminded of the soft warm breeze and the smell of the rural country side which propelled me to break with tradition of my usual patterns and use thin layers of transparent paint over pale toned under-painting. Outcomes are often unexpected but I find when I take risks, I am pleased with the result as it portrays my emotion on that particular day while driving in the country.

As an artist, I draw inspiration from my happy childhood in a quaint picturesque village. The classical way in which I learned to draw prompted me to practice as much as possible, which I spent many years doing. It was only when I felt I had become proficient in the basics that I made the leap to paint with acrylic and then oil. My preference on any given day ultimately balances out equally between figurative and landscape and are a tangible record of the world seen through my eyes. People often describe me as "driven" in my need to be creative and I often cross that line between passion and obsession…and I wouldn't have it any other way. To me, everything is a painting. When I'm not painting, I'm thinking about painting.
